Beautiful and enchanting with many medieval towers that form a scenic skyline, San Gimignano is a hilltop town in the Tuscan region, southwest of Florence, that is rich in history, ancient traditions, quality wine, and food. Through this Field Learning activity, the confines of the classroom will expand to incorporate one of the most fascinating corners of Tuscany.

Itinerary: 

Early departure from Florence to San Gimignano. Tour of San Gimignano’s town center. Guided visit of selected sites (including Duomo and Palazzo Comunale). Time to work on FL assignment and free time. Return to Florence in the early evening.

Learning outcomes:

  • Familiarize with the history of a ‘minor’ town in Tuscany
  • Identify the values of the Middle Ages across Italy and Europe
  • Trace the origins of many aspects of Western European culture and of modern Western society in general
  • Place artworks and other archaeological evidence in the context that created them
  • Familiarize with gothic architecture and the historical period in which this style developed
