Prato’s urban landscape, like those of the majority of Tuscan towns, is richly rooted in Medieval and Renaissance history and the city is characterized by an abundance of art, monuments, churches, and palaces. Given its proximity to Florence, the histories of the two cities have been closely intertwined over the centuries. Prato has represented over the centuries the design, development, and manufacturing of Italian products as well 20th century immigration. The Field Learning activity will cover significant sites related to Prato’s religious and civic historic background as well as its local economy such as the textile industry boasting a museum with a vast archive of historic samples and documents, and the production of the town’s famed biscotti di Prato.

Itinerary: 

Morning departure from Florence to Prato. Guided walking tour of the historic center, including the Cathedral of Santo Stefano, Palazzo Pretorio, Palazzo Datini, Santa Maria Delle Carceri, and the Castello dell’Imperatore; visit to the Biscottificio Mattei, including biscotti tasting; visit to the Museo del Tessuto (textile museum). Time to work on FL assignments and free time. Return to Florence in the early evening.

  • Entrance fees or costs associated to sites/activities visited on one's own

  • Gain a broader knowledge of food culture and products that are unique to the Italian territory, history, and culture
  • Describe the processes of production and the history of Prato's famous biscotti
  • Understand the history and the development of the textile industry in Prato
  • Discover the artistic and architectural importance of Prato during the Middle Ages and Renaissance
