Montecatini is the biggest spa town in Italy. During the end of the 1800’s Montecatini was an important international center for the Belle Epoque, visited by artists, musicians, and composers such as Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, and Richard Strauss just to name a few. After their expansion during the Belle Epoque, the spas now offer not only the well-known thermal healing waters but also fully serviced modern relaxation treatments. Through this Field Learning activity, students will familiarize with the history of a minor town in Tuscany, explore its beautiful city center and main sites, and gain a taste of authentic Tuscan culture.

Itinerary:
Early departure from Florence to Montecatini, guided visit of the Montecatini city center with a focus on the town’s many fountains. Entrance to the thermal spa for guided visit of spa facilities and garden, and free time. Time to work on FL assignment. Return to Florence in the early evening.

Learning outcomes:
  • Familiarize with the history of a minor town in Tuscany: Montecatini
  • Assess the achievements of Renaissance architecture outside Florence
  • Trace the origins of many aspects of Western European culture and of modern Western society in general
  • Trace the early development of the contemporary spa
  • Describe the philosophy of spa, spa-goers, and domains of spa. Identify the emotional responses that spa professionals and guests have to spas.
