Ferrara played a major role in Italian history thanks to the influence of the ruling Este family, and represents a location often cited in major periods and movements, including the Renaissance and Humanism. From this illustrious past emerges a continuation of culture and the arts that has evolved and continues to impact modern times. Ferrara lends itself as the ideal background to not only art history but in literary and media representations, such as one of author Giorgio Bassani's major works, The Garden of the Finzi-Continis. The novel explores the darker side of Italy's racial laws leading up to WWII set against the lush and insular backdrop of upperclass Ferrara, and subsequently became a significant example of Italian media through Vittorio DeSica's film adaption.
