During this Field Learning activity, students will explore Tuscany’s past and uncover its sense of spirituality. The area students will visit lies on the Via Francigena, one of the pilgrimage routes that cut across Europe, from Trondheim in Norway all the way south to Rome, where the body of St. Peter has rested for centuries. Tradition, history, and deep religious and spiritual essence are tangible in the abbeys even today.

Itinerary: 

Early departure from Florence to San Galgano Abbey for a walking tour and visit. Then a lunch break at a local restaurant where students will have the opportunity to taste local products. In the afternoon, guided visit of the Abbey of Sant’Antimo and exploration of the surroundings. Time to work on FL assignment and free time. Return to Florence in the early evening.

  • Identify the values of the Middle Ages across Italy and Europe.
  • Recognize the monastic orders and their Saint founders
  • Trace the origins of many aspects of Western European culture and of modern Western society in general
  • Place artworks and other archaeological evidence in the context that created them
  • Familiarize with gothic architecture and the historical period in which this style developed
