During the centuries in which members of the Medici family exerted power over Tuscany, they constantly conquered, built, and enforced their influence throughout the region. This Field Learning activity gives students the opportunity to visit two Medici Villas, namely the Medici Villa in Poggio a Caiano and in Artimino, and immerse themselves in the cultural atmosphere of the family’s countryside lifestyle.

Itinerary:

Early departure from Florence to the first Medici Villa in Poggio a Caiano. Guided visit of the villa and transfer to the second villa in Artimino. Lunch in a historical local restaurant serving local products. Time to work on FL assignment and free time. Return to Florence in the early evening. 

The activity includes:

  • Display knowledge of the lifestyle and historical, artistic and cultural aspects of the long era of the Medici family’s dominance.
  • Recognize the characteristic element of the presence of the Medici’s ancient activities in the city
  • Analyze the links between the Medici's politics and their use of the arts
  • Identify the main characters in the Medici family
  • Assess the achievements of Renaissance architecture outside Florence
