Castiglioncello is a ‘frazione’ in the province of Livorno. It stands on a promontory reaching out into the Ligurian Sea, surrounded by pinewoods and hills that run down to the sea. Castiglioncello has been a renowned sea resort since the 19th century. People who made their homes here include actors Marcello Mastroianni, Luchino Visconti, and Vittorio Gassman. The Macchiaioli, a group of Italian artists active in Tuscany in the second half of the nineteenth century chose Castiglioncello as an inspirational focus for their work. In this Field Learning activity, students will be able to enjoy the splendid nature Italy has to offer and simultaneously delve into the country’s artistic and popular culture.   

Itinerary: 

Early departure from Florence to Castiglioncello. Walking tour and guided visit of the town and main sites, including Castello Pasquini. Gelato tasting at artisanal ice-cream producer and free time. Return to Florence in the early evening.

  • Familiarize with the history of Castiglioncello and its importance in the Italian cultural scene
  • Familiarize with the history of Italian cinema and the key role played by actors such as Marcello Mastroianni, Luchino Visconti, and Vittorio Gassman
  • Gain a broader knowledge of food and products that are unique to the Italian territory, history, and culture
  • Increase critical thinking, especially in relation to the role tourism plays in marketing the history, food, and culture of Italy
  • Develop team-building and collaborative skills
