The Casentino Valley is rich with history, art, good food and outdoor activities. Lying approximately 50 km to the east of Florence, this isolated valley offers opportunities for visitors of all ages visiting castles, trekking through centuries-old forests, tasting authentic recipes and discovering many of the best kept secrets from locals. Through this Field Learning activity, students will have the opportunity to explore a hidden corner of Tuscany and closely observe local artisan production with a specific focus on the panno Casentino. 

Itinerary: 

Early departure from Florence to Stia. Walking tour of Stia and guided visit of the Museo dell’Arte della Lana. Visit to a local artisan workshop. Time to work on FL assignment and free time. Return to Florence in the early evening. 

The activity includes:

  • Entry fees and guided visit of selected sites
  • Field learning staff on-site

  • Entrance fees or costs associated to sites/activities visited on own 


Learning outcomes:

  • Become familiar with the history of the town of Stia and of the wider Casentino area
  • Assess the importance of textile production in the specific area of Casentino
  • Gain a broader knowledge of food and products that are unique to the Italian territory, history, and culture
  • Increase critical thinking, especially in relation to the role tourism plays in marketing the history, food, and culture of Italy
  • Develop team-building and collaborative skills
