This Field Learning activity will introduce students to a hidden corner of Tuscany. Founded by the Etruscans, Arezzo is a main point of reference for industry, history, culture and fashion. Attention will be given to major sites and visits in the city, as well as to the international marketing and trade that has helped drive the city’s success. 

Itinerary: 

Early departure from Florence to Arezzo. Walking tour and guided visit of the Arezzo’s city-centre and main sites including the Basilica di San Francesco and the Casa Museo di Giorgio Vasari. Time to work on FL assignment and free time. Return to Florence in the early evening. 


The activity includes: 

  • Round-trip transportation 
  • Entry fees and guided visits of selected sites 
  • Field learning staff on-site
  • Insurance

The activity does not include: 

  • Meals not listed above
  • Entrance fees or costs associated to sites/activities visited on own during free time


Learning outcomes:

  • Becoming familiar with the history of Arezzo as a ‘minor’ town in Tuscany
  • Ability to recognize the characteristics of cultural heritage in Italy
  • Reflecting on the role of spirituality and religion in Italian culture
  • Evaluating the revolution which took place in the art of the 13th Century through the work of Italian masters such as Giotto, Cimabue, and Simone Martini
  • Ability to assess the role of Piero della Francesca in the history of early Renaissance painting
