THE GLORY OF PISA IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

Saturday, February 24

Cost: 80€

This Field Learning activity allows students to explore a unique city like Pisa from a slightly different perspective. Usually you look at this city through the Leaning Tower point of view, but it actually has a glorious past to be discovered. It hosts masterpieces and buildings dating back to the Byzantine and Romanesque period, where the Eastern and Western Christian churches tried to find a common ground.
However, the city of Pisa is host to priceless treasures, like the Piazza dei Miracoli, with its famous Tower, the Cathedral and the Baptistery.
This activity is an exploration of the territories that are off of the ordinary tourist path: art masterpieces of both the Byzantine and Romanesque periods, in order to understand the watershed between the Antiquity and the Middle Ages, both from a historical and an artistic point of view. Furthermore, Pisa shares the importance of commercial trades by sea, being a Maritime Republic in the early Middle Ages.
