panzanobackTHE HEART OF CHIANTI CLASSICO: PANZANO, MACELLERIA CECCHINI AND ANTINORY WINERY

Saturday, April 21

Cost: 90€

This activity will lead you through one of the most charming areas of Tuscany, full of architecture, history, gastronomical traditions, and untouched nature. Panzano in Chianti is a village in the heart of the Florentine production area of Chianti Classico. It is located in what is called “Conca d’Oro” (golden basin or golden shell), the name given to the valley which lies south of the town of Panzano. It was given this name due to its amphitheatre shape and the wheat which was grown there until the last century, which gave the golden colour to the landscape. Today, the area is renowned for the production of Chianti Classico, and also for the production of cured meat, known not only in Italy, but also around the world.
The activity includes a visit to what may be considered one of the most famous butcher shops in the world. Dario Cecchini, butcher of the Antica Macelleria Cecchini, rose to fame during the mad cow disease crisis when eating a ‘bistecca fiorentina’ or t-bone steak was prohibited for health scare reasons. He organised a funeral for the bistecca fiorentina and a plaque still commemorates the ceremony.
The activity will also include a visit to the new Antinori cellars in Bargino, San Casciano in Val di Pesa. The cellars of this renowned Tuscan winemaker were inaugurated in 2012 and are a homage to the family’s historic ties with the region. Antinori has been producing wine for over 20 generations, with the last generation improving the winery’s already stellar reputation with the creation of high-end wines with a story, such as Tignanello and Solaia. The new cellars and headquarters in Bargino are unique in Italy. They were constructed with local materials and with maximum respect for the environment and the Tuscan landscape. These are the locations where the Villa Antinori Chianti Classico, the Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva, the Peppoli Chianti Classico and the Vinsanto di Chianti Classico are produced.
