This Field Learning itinerary will guide students through the discovery of the Umbria and Marche regions. Both towns are located in the scenic Apennine mountains; Gubbio is renowned for the role it played in the life of St. Francis from Assisi while Fabriano, nominated as the 2019 UNESCO Creative City, is well-known worldwide for its production of high-quality paper.

Itinerary: 

Early morning departure from Florence to Gubbio and later. Guided walking tour of the city, including entrance to selected sites, such as Gubbio’s Duomo, Palazzo dei Consoli and its museum, and the Palazzo Ducale. Free time for lunch. Transfer to Fabriano, walking tour of the city, including entrance to Fabriano’s paper museum. Time to work on FL assignment and free time. Return to Florence in the early evening.

  • Entrance fees or costs associated to sites/activities visited on own during free time

Learning outcomes:

  • Familiarize with the history of two minor towns in Italy and the Umbria region
  • Recognize the characteristics of Cultural Heritage Tourism in Italy
  • Demonstrate familiarity with Italian religious tradition and recognize its diverse manifestations in particular cultural contexts
  • Discover the history of ‘minor’ cities within Italy, their culture and traditions
  • Evaluate the importance of craftsmanship in Italian/Tuscan culture and economy
