A TIME OF SPLENDOR: THE HERITAGE OF IMPERIAL ROME

Sat, September 16 - Sun, September 17

Cost: 240€

Rome is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world; every year millions of tourists come from around the world to admire the treasures and masterpieces of Roman art and architecture.
No other city comes close to the richness of Rome. It may no longer be Caput Mundi (capital of the world), but Rome is an epic, bubbling-over metropolis harboring lost empires. One visit and you will be hooked. Rome has a glorious monumentality that it wears without reverence.

Built as a private summer retreat between 118 and 134 a.d. by the Emperor Hadrian, Villa Adriana in Tivoli today is an example of the finest architecture of the Roman world. The grounds of the Imperial Palace covered an area of 120 hectares (300 acres) and were filled with full-scale reproductions of the emperor's favorite buildings from Greece and Egypt. Although some of the ruins lying scattered in the surrounding fields have yet to be identified, many buildings of amazing beauty give a perfect idea of how the whole complex looked in its heyday. One of the most impressive is the Maritime Theater. This is a round pool with an island in the middle, surrounded by columns. There were also traditional theatres, Greek and Latin libraries, two bathhouses, extensive housing for guests and the palace staff, and formal gardens with fountains, statues and pools. The most ambitious of Hadrian's replicas was the Canopus, a sanctuary of the god Serapis near Alexandria.
